India now has four confirmed cases of the Omicron variant, while several samples have been sent for genome sequencing and the results are awaited. Of the four cases, three have confirmed infections as coming from "at-risk" countries. All Omicron-infected individuals are male and there is no uniform age pattern – two elderly, two middle-aged. One patient was not even vaccinated. What has been common to all of these cases is that they all have mild or no symptoms..

Karnataka

  1. India's first Omicron case was of a 66-year-old South African national who has left India.        His primary and secondary contacts have been tested negative
    
  2.The SA national reached Bengaluru on 20 November and was tested at the airport.

  3.As soon as he tested positive, a government doctor saw him at the hospital where he was        staying and advised him to remain in quarantine. They were again sampled and sent for          genome sequencing. By the time the genome sequencing results came in and it was                confirmed that he was affected by the Omicron variant, he had left the country.
 
  4.On November 23, he was tested again at a private testing facility, where his result was            negative. On 27 November he left for Dubai.
 
  5.The South African citizen was vaccinated.
